Valley Queen - 30 Public Square

8:00 pm. We welcome back Californias Valley Queen to Nelsonville for their first Stuarts show after a great set at this years Nelsonville Music Festival. Valley Queen has blended their bluesy southern rock influences into creating an Americana Indie rock phenomenon that is lighting up stages all across the country. There is nothing more California centric than this band. Valley Queen front woman Natalie Carol leads a band reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac and My Morning Jacket with lead vocals evocative of Florence Welch. Their sound brings to mind the soul and power of southern rock combined with inspired and personal lyrics. Over the past year, Valley Queen has been recording tracks for their debut, full-length LP and have played lauded shows at an array of venues, opening for Lucero, LP, Laura Marling and The Wild Reeds, as well as headlining Pappy and Harriets in Joshua Tree, the Echo Park Rising Festival and Broke LA Festival in Los Angeles. Within the past year, they have also played a triumphant string of shows at the 2015 CMJ Music Marathon in NYC and SXSW in Austin. They have most recently played at Make Music Pasadena, Lightning in a Bottle in California and a Tiny Desk concert at the NPR offices in DC. Valley Queen headlined their first residency series at The Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles through out July to raucous crowds for three consecutive weeks. In August of 2016, the band released the singles -In My Place- and -High Expectations- on Canvasback Music/Atlantic Records to wide acclaim.

Los Lobos - An evening with

7:00 pm. After celebrating their 40th anniversary with the cleverly titled 2013 live album Disconnected In New York City, the hard working, constantly touring band – David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin – leaps headfirst into their fifth decade with an invitation to join them as they open fresh and exciting new Gates of Gold, their first full length studio album since 2010s Tin Can Trust (a Grammy nominee for Best Americana Album) and second with Savoy/429 Records. The dynamic songwriting, deeply poetic lyrics, thoughtful romantic and spiritual themes and eclectic blend of styles on the 11 track collection has resulted in an American saga in the rich literary tradition of legendary authors John Steinbeck and William Faulkner. Yet true to form, these typically humble musical wolves started in on the project without any grand vision or musical road map. Over 30 years after Los Lobos major label breakthrough How Will The Wolf Survive? - their 1984 album that ranks #30 on Rolling Stones list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s – their main challenge when they get off the road and head back into the studio is, as Berlin says, -trying not to do stuff we have already done. To a certain extent, we are always drawing from the same multi-faceted paint box, and we sound like what we sound like. We are proud of what we feel is an honest body of work. We just want to keep finding new ways to say things.- In the bands early recording days - those years just before and after -La Bamba,- their worldwide crossover hit from the 1987 film which reached #1 on the U.S. and UK singles chart - they prepared for album recording sessions with top producers like T-Bone Burnett with pre-production that included multiple rehearsals and -outlining- what the project was going to be. The more spontaneous approach to writing and recording that they took on their 1992 Mitchell Froom co-produced set Kiko still exists today. Rosas says, -When I listen to our catalog, doing things more spontaneously in the studio has led to some of our best work.- Unlike many bands that write, gather and catalog material between studio releases, Los Lobos prefers to create their magic on the fly when they decide it is time to record. Perez says, -We never come in with a cache of 20 songs. Our thing is to write as we are recording. It is like starting with a blank canvass every time.-

The Stray Birds

8:00 pm. Stuarts welcomes The Stray Birds for a show in our brand new space at 30 Public Square. All originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, The Stray Birds started as a duo of acoustic buskers in early 2010 when Maya de Vitry and Oliver Craven met with their instruments, their voices, and their songs. It did not take much convincing to get bassist Charlie Muench on board, and with the addition of a third unique and powerful voice, the group began to define its captivating sound. Seven years, three original records, and some six hundred performances later, the band is best known today for its songwriting, its tight and forthcoming vocal harmony blend and its commitment to an impassioned delivery of original material, both on stage and in the studio. They have been seen from LA to London, sung songs from Dallas to Denmark, and played tunes from New York to New Orleans. Their 2016 Yep Roc Records release Magic Fire was produced by Grammy-winner Larry Campbell and earned much praise, including being named by NPR as one of Folk Alleys Top Ten Records of 2016. With time, their sound has evolved to a palate broader than what it first was on the street corners and in the markets, but this much remains true: The Stray Birds is a band of musicians as subtle and nuanced as they are energetic, a band of writers as blatant and bold as they are coy, and perhaps most importantly, a band of people as friendly and compassionate as they are talented. It is safe to imagine that most who hear their music come back for another listen, time and again.

Joan Shelley

8:00 pm James Elkington will open the show. Stuarts is thrilled to welcome back Joan Shelley to Nelsonville for a set in our brand new space The Stage at 30 Public Square. The stunning, self-titled fourth album from the Kentucky singer, songwriter, and guitarist Joan Shelley began, surprisingly, with a fiddle. In the summer of 2014, Shelley fell for -Hog of the Forsaken,- a bowed rollick at the end of Michael Hurleys wayward folk circus, Long Journey, then nearly forty years old. Hurleys voice, it seemed to Shelley, clung to the fiddles melody, dipping where it dipped and climbing where it climbed. This was a small, significant revelation, prompting the guitarist to trade temporarily six strings for four and, as she puts it, -try to play like Michael.- That is, she wanted to sing what she played, to play what she sang. She tried it, for a spell, with the fiddle. JAMES ELKINGTON Drawing from British folk, avant-rock, and jazz traditions alike, Wintres Woma-- Old English for -the sound of winter--- is James Elkingtons debut solo record, but you have likely heard his masterful guitar playing and arranging, even if you did not realize it. Elkington (an Englishman living in Chicago) is an inveterate collaborator who brings his lyrical compositional and improvisational sensibilities to any group. He has toured, recorded, and/or collaborated with Jeff Tweedy, Richard Thompson, Steve Gunn, Michael Chapman, Joan Shelley, Nathan Salsburg and Brokeback, to name just a few of his many enthusiastic admirers. His assured album, recorded at Wilcos Loft, is baroquely detailed and beautifully constructed, featuring both his baritone vocals and some of Chicagos finest, including Tomeka Reid.

Join with the Haunted Hocking HHIT team as they search for the unexplained at Ash Cave or try your hand at Pumpkin decorating. Registered campers and cabin guests can enjoy a hayride, a family fun spooky movie, site judging, and trick or treat at Old Mans Cave campground. Regular camping cabin fees apply. What better way to savor the feeling of a good ghost story around the campfire than to jump right in and investigate it. Using an EMF detector to find out if that funny sound was a local bat or. . . maybe a ghost. Hocking Hills State Park Naturalist, Pat Quackenbush, local professional biologists, naturalists and ghost hunters, Haunted Hocking Investigation Team, take to the trails to try to demystify some of the local legends and ghost stories of the region. From owl calling to using night vision tools, visitors get a hands-on experience using authentic ghosts hunting equipment. An Evening with Noam Pikelny

8:00 pm Noam Pikelny has emerged as the preeminent banjoist of his generation and we welcome him to Stuarts for an evening of music. He is a founding member of Punch Brothers, a 3-time Grammy Nominee and was awarded the first annual Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass in 2010. Universal Favorite is the fourth record Noam Pikelny has released under his own name, but it is truly his solo debut. His previous efforts—including 2011s Beat the Devil and Carry a Rail and 2014s landmark Noam Pikelny Plays Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe—were full-band affairs that revealed his abilities as a dynamic bandleader while reinforcing his reputation as an inventive accompanist. The new release features only the man himself, playing lovely originals and covers that showcase his unique approach to the instrument and compositional flair. He recorded them live in the studio without accompaniment, coaxing a wide array of sounds and colors out of his instruments, embracing the challenges and exploring the new possibilities of the solo setting.

Santa Train

11:00 am Departure. 2:00 pm Departure. 6:00 pm Departure on Saturday Dec 2nd and Dec 9th Only. Our longest-running annual event, the Santa Train has been a long-standing family tradition for over three decades. These ever-popular trains begin Saturday, November 25th and continue each Saturday and Sunday through Sunday, December 17th. Two trains depart the Nelsonville Depot round-trip to East Logan each Saturday and Sunday during that time at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. We will also have an evening departure time of 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 2nd and 9th. Each train features the same theme–Santa gets on board the train and visits with each child as the train traverses the historic (and with any luck, snow-covered) Hocking River Valley. Each coach is decorated, heated, Christmas music plays throughout the train over the audio system, and after Santas visit, each child receives a special candy cane treat. Make sure your child or grandchild brings his or her list to share with Santa. These are incredibly popular and do tend to sell out, so order as early as possible to secure your seat. Duration of ride: Approximately two hours

Cost: $17/adult, $15/sen, $13/child
